A Cozy Visit to Jeremy Clarkson’s Pub: A Delightful Dining Experience at The Farmer’s Dog

Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, The Farmer’s Dog, has become a landmark for fans of both Clarkson and good British food. After a previous visit where no mains were available, I was eager to return and sample the heartier offerings on the menu. With a stunning seating area on the terrace, a beautiful bar, and a cozy atmosphere, it’s clear this is a place designed to enjoy a relaxing meal. But would the food meet the same high standard? Let’s find out.

The menu is refreshingly simple: four starters, five mains, and three desserts, all offering a tight selection. For £30, you can enjoy two courses, and for £40, you can treat yourself to three, including a complimentary pint, glass of Buck’s Fizz, or soft drink. The range is limited, but it’s all about quality over quantity here, and the offerings reflect that.

To start, I chose the vegetarian Scotch broth. Traditionally made with lamb, this version substitutes the meat for hearty vegetables, barley, and kale. The flavors were warming, filling, and perfect for a winter’s day, leaving me satisfied and ready for what was next.

For the main course, I opted for the 12-hour slow-cooked beef from Clarkson’s own Diddly Squat Farm. The beef was so tender it practically fell apart with a touch of the fork, and the horseradish mash added a zing that complemented the rich flavor of the beef. The crispy onions and Hawkstone gravy tied the dish together, though I couldn’t help but wish for just a touch more gravy. Still, it was a dish that truly embodied the spirit of British comfort food.

For dessert, I indulged in a classic bread and butter pudding with a side of clotted cream ice cream. The pudding was rich and satisfying, while the ice cream provided the perfect sweet touch with its creamy texture and a hint of raspberry. Though the portion size wasn’t huge, it was just the right amount to end the meal on a sweet note.

The service was exceptional – friendly, efficient, and attentive. A young, enthusiastic team ensured everything ran smoothly, making the entire dining experience that much more enjoyable. As for the atmosphere, The Farmer’s Dog was decorated beautifully for Christmas, adding to the festive charm of the pub.

The bill came to around £40, including a service charge, which felt reasonable for the experience. Was it the best pub food I’ve ever had? Not quite, but it was definitely a very solid 8 out of 10. The food was comforting, the service impeccable, and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. Would I recommend The Farmer’s Dog? Absolutely, especially on a cold winter’s day when all you crave is hearty, well-made food.

So, if you’re in the area, don’t hesitate to pay Jeremy Clarkson’s pub a visit. Whether you’re a fan of his or just a lover of great food, you’re sure to have a delightful experience.
